For instance, you might choose single hung windows with colonial-style muntins for the front of your home, while using casement windows in the bedrooms to assure egress in case of emergencies.

EGRESS WINDOWS
The Building Codes require certain rooms, mostly bedrooms in residences, to have incorporated at least a window with a size that will allow a person to exit or firefighter to enter through it. Local regulations vary, so you’ll need to start with a visit to your Code Compliance Office. With minor variances, here’s what you’ll find:

• As for size requirements, a window with a minimum opening of 5.7 sq. ft. is needed.
• This opening must have a minimum width of 20” and a minimum height of 24”
• The window sill must be located no higher than 44” For floors other than ground, the window sill must be located no lower than 36” from the floor.
• Locking devices must be placed no higher than 54” from the floor.

All of the above must be met; otherwise your window will not be considered and EGRESS WINDOW

Adding windowpane dividers (muntins) enhances many architectural styles and gives your home extra curb appeal. PGT muntins can be applied to both the exterior and interior of your windows and doors. Muntins will be between the panes of insulating glass.

The new storefront products join the existing Architectural Systems product line, which include single hung, horizontal roller and picture windows, and sliding glass doors.

Our exclusive WinGuard® products combine heavy-duty window and door frames with impact-resistant laminated glass to ensure flying debris does not enter your home in the event of a major storm. A special silicone glazing process is used to keep the glass from breaking away from its frame. Although wind-borne debris may crack the glass on impact, the interlayer keeps the overall window intact, preventing destructive wind from entering your home. WinGuard with vinyl frames meets or exceeds International Building Code standards for air/water/structural and small and large missile impact protection and has Florida State Product Approval. WinGuard with aluminum frames has Miami-Dade Approvals to meet Florida’s most stringent code requirements for wind-borne debris protection and Florida State Product Approvals.

Miami-Dade County has the strictest test protocols in the country for wind-borne debris, air and water tests. The Miami-Dade County Notice of Acceptance (NOA) for impact-resistant products is the best way to be sure that a window has been tested and meets all the requirements for hurricane protection in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (Miami-Dade and Broward counties). The Florida Building Commission recognizes Miami- Dade NOAs as approved products. WinGuard with aluminum frames carries Miami-Dade approval on all products.

Building Codes

New building codes and requirements have recently been enacted in several states to provide increased protection of lives and property in areas subject to hurricanes. Because code standards and requirements vary from state-to-state and among local jurisdictions, please check with your local building authority for the most recent code requirements

Florida

The Florida Building Code, effective as of March 1, 2002, sets stricter requirements for homeowners and builders. Depending on location, builders in coastal counties are required to build homes to withstand winds of 110 to 150 miles per hour. Installation of hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows and doors such as PGT® WinGuard® meets this requirement.

Non-impact windows made from tempered or annealed glass which can be broken easily by flying debris so they required hurricane shutters to protect them. In addition, the cost of non-impact windows and accordion shutters combine together is the same as the impact windows. Unattractive roll-down and accordion-style hurricane shutters offer no protection if you’re not home to close them every time a storm threatens.
